It really depends on what you're using it for. I started out back in college with a blade grinder. While it's not great, it's much better than buying pre-ground coffee. If you're going to be using paper filters, you'll be fine. If you're not, expect to have sludge in the bottom of your cup.

I use a Bodum blade grinder for my French press and swear by mine. I've used it for several years with the same French press and I love it. I can adjust the grind fairly well and I don't mind a little sludge in the bottom of the cup. Like bottle conditioned beer, I learn not to upset the sludge in the bottom and leave the last 1/4 inch in the bottom of the cup.

I hate the inconsistent grind I get from my cheap blade grinder (i use a french press), but won't be shelling out for a better grinder anytime soon, it does the trick well enough.

I sometimes even like the sludge, definitely packs more of a kick...

sometimes i just buy pre ground coffee, i know im a sell out, but i hate my blade grinder and a good burr grinder is to much money. I keep my coffee in the freezer to keep it as fresh as possible, but still most of the time its pre ground...

I have the Black and Decker Burr Grinder and I wish I had gone pricier. It doesn't grind espresso fine enough.

yeah i think takes about 100 bucks to get a decent burr grinder. Just like with anything you get what you pay for.

I'm still using a blade. I use it in short bursts and then settle. Then short bursts again. It helps to keep it more consistent and not burn it. I really want a burr mill grinder too but my budget will allow $50-60 max. My coffee is still very good and much better than any canned stuff. I think a roasting setup is going to be first on my list though.

Like I said the B&D Burr grinder is great as long as you don't need to go to fine with it. I have had nothing with bad luck when it comes to blades.

I've been using a Braun blade grinder for the past 10+ years and do the similar method of Stryker777 (short burst grinding). A refurbished Baratza Virtuoso is on my Christmas wish list. www.baratza.com - Refurbished Virtuoso in Refurbished Grinders
