Breville Grinders
Does anyone have an opinion about Breville BCG450XL grinders? Since I am budget limited (I have a wife, two daughters, and 3 Jeeps - Guess where my money goes), I want to find something decent but at a fair price. Thanks

Think of what grinder you could get for one of those Jeeps. Sorry buddy, never used a Breville.

Are you trying to get a fine grind for espresso or just for a drip?

More drip than anything but some french press and eventually espresso. The more I read about it, the more a french press sounds like a good thing to go to. Since I spend so much time outdoors, I am also looking at the GSI grinder and coffee press.

hey Stryker777, not sure if you have seen it, but there are 215 reviews from people who bought the Breville BCG450XL and posted their comments on Amazon. Amazon.com: Customer Reviews: Breville BCG450XL Conical Burr Grinder Coffeegeek.com would also be a good resource for snooping around for grinders.

I have this grinder, it works really well.
The early models had a switch on the side which would break easily, and as I discovered by calling several repair houses the part is impossible to find to get it repaired since everybody has the same problem causing it to always be backordered. Crappy design... The more recent model I have seen appears to have removed the problematic on/off switch which isn't needed anyway, since you activate it with a timer start button on the front panel.
When my switch broke I tore the unit apart, cut out the switch and just twisted the wires together with electrical tape so it always has power. Still working great, just a little ghetto looking with electrical tape covering the gap where the switch used to be.

Thanks for the input! About the switch, measure the whole size and just buy a 120v switch from http://jameco.com You can find one to fit it, and any will work. May not look exactly the same but it will be work better and be easily replaceable in the future.

Stryker, for just a few dollars more I would recommend this grinder
:: Baratza :: Products ::
Baratza makes grinders, period. Breville is more of an all around appliance company, not coffee specialists. Baratza makes the Vario (poke around on their web page) which is one of the best grinders on the market at the asking price.
You can even get the Maestro for $70. These are much better grinders than any product put out by Breville.

Thanks Bigmike. I keep looking at the Baratza stuff. Every time I am ready to buy something, I go there and they are out of refurbished units (which is the only way my wife will not freak out if I get one). That probably says something very good about their quality lol. Still, I am patient and wanted to get more info about other brands. In the end, I may get a Baratza Maestro. I would love to get a Virtuoso. Will see. Thanks for the good advice
