Default Moving up to a BBQ drum roaster

Well, I've gone and done it. My friend Jon was selling his BBQ drum setup, because he's moving up to a commercial sample roaster. I've been wanting to move up to a drum roaster, but was looking at about $700 in start up costs. My buddy gave me a hell of a deal on his, so I'm going this way instead. I'll be picking it up the first week of November. The drum is the 4lb variety, but I don't think I'll be doing 4lb batches very often. Maybe around the holidays as gifts for the neighbors. More details and pics to follow.

Congratulations, that's awesome. I've been looking into the same thing, it's just cost prohibitive right now, and with the holiday season coming up, I'm thinking it's going to be a while.

If you ever want a tester for your beans, you know where to find me!

Definitely! Let me get her home and run a few batches, then I'll be ready to rock n roll.

I might end up selling my Behmor, but I haven't made up my mind on that yet.

I have a one pound drum and the regular rotiserie motor that fit my home BBQ. I have been roasting on a Fresh Roast Plus 8 and a Fresh roast sr300 and was a little disappointed in my BBQ roasts, I don't have as much control over the roast and I think I should have gotten a better motor. The roasts came out uneven. Probably a new BBQ would help also, mine is kinda old.

Hi Jim,
I have read that the cheapie motors just won't cut the mustard. Also, the RK website recommends a grill that can put out a minimum 35,000 BTUs. There has also been a lot written about wind/temperature and how it affects a roast. Wind seems to have a bigger affect on a roast. There are people who have attached sheet metal in the lid of the grill. This is supposed to help with temperature stability. There is loads of information on the net about BBQ roasting, so don't throw in the towel.

One other thing. The smaller roasters are supposed to produce a "brighter" roast than the bigger drum roasters. Some people really like the brightness in their cup. Just a thought that rattled around in my brain.

NICE! Pictures? I've been looking to eventually move that direction some day.

I haven't picked up the roater, because it's in Houston. I'm making the drive out in a couple of weeks. I have halloween this weekend and my daughters first birthday party the following weekend. I'll be picking it up the weekend of the 13th.
I'm probably going to sell my Behmore, if anyone is interested.
