Default Where do I get started?

I was over at at a friends who's father had shipped him some of his home roasted coffee, not sure which type, but it was amazing, better than anyhting I've had before. I want to start myself, but am not real sure where to begin. To be honest, I've never really been into coffee, so maybe a cheaper unit just to get me started? How did you guys start?

I started with a manual grinder and a moka. Then an automatic grinder and a Bodum french press, by trying different fresh beans every day.

Start with the book 'Home Coffee Roasting' by Kenneth Davids. It is easy to read and an excellent intro to roasting. It is where I started. Eventually I went to the Coffee Lab roasting school in Waterbury Vermont.

There are lots of low cost ways to get into roasting

I started with a Caffe Rosto roaster. It is a hot air unit. Easy to use but limited.

Any of the small hot air roaster is a beginning.

I started with Fresh Roast plus 8 and I still use it plus the Fresh Roast SR300. I love roasting coffee. I have been doing it now for about 5 years. I even started my own website to sell unique green coffee beans to home roasters. Not as big as Sweet Marias but one can dream.
