the only way my family has ever made coffee is the hobo way ..
put a pot of water on put the grounds ( only use the best " Butternut " brand ) IN the water , bring the water to a boil
( careful or it will boil over ) boil for a min , turn off let it set for 3 or 4 min .
Now have a good cup of coffee ....
Mom Weaned me on coffee , I started drinking black coffee made this way .
if I don't get 2 pots of coffee every day ,,, when I set down I go to sleep with
in 2 min ..

I did not take any offense. I think location determines what you call it. More Cowboys than hobos down here... well at least there was.

That sounds like my cup of coffee, especially at work. If the spoon doesn't stand straight up before I add any cream or sugar, it's not strong enough.

That sounds like it would be very strong and burnt. But I could see that as being appealing to some people. I know a person who burns his toast and tortillas on purpose because he like the carbon taste...so maybe there is something related going on here

i've had it this way on a white water rafting trip...we stopped for lunch and they had a HUGE pot, threw grounds right in. At some point during the boil, they broke open a bunch of eggs and threw them in the pot (shells and all). The eggs cooked (solidified) in the coffee and captured a majority of the grounds. The resulting cup of coffee was one of the best I have ever had...black, and I don't drink it black normally.
Strange but true, I doubted it from the moment I saw it!

I've always heard that referred to as "cowboy coffee" as well, and there aren't a lot of cowboys on the coast of Virginia.
