Default New Orleans French Market

Since 1890- Coffee & Chicory

Watch out for this stuff kids, it'll put hair on that chest!

Use half of what you normally use (for you college kids, that means if you like four scoops, only use two)

I've found this a good after dinner coffee. If you're a sugar & creamer person, it's most likely not your taste.

I like the flavor component that chicory provides. I had never heard of the brand you mentioned.

Ahh growing up in New Orleans you could smell this stuff everywhere. Especially around Cafe Du Mondte. It goes great with beingnets!

I much preffer the Cafe' Du' Monde, over French Market. Someday, I'll grow my own Chickory and try a hand at roasting it...

My wife's family is from NOLA and one year her aunt brought me a few bags of the coffee that's in the yellow bags with brown lettering. I had never had chickory, so I had no idea what was coming. I have to say that it was one of the worst cups of coffee that I've ever had. Sure it was strong, but I didn't like the flavor at all. No idea who came up with that idea, but it sucked. LOL

When Louisiana was being blockaded, there were many shortages, leading to the "Petticoat Rebellion." Many of the uniquely 'Cajun' additives, including Chickory, were a result. People learned to use what the natives used... Chickory is only one of many things that have been used to extend limited coffee supplies.

In Cajun food, File' powder is a common seasoning... Pulverized, dried Sassafras leaves!

Back to Chickory coffee... It's usually served mixed 1:1 with milk/cream and plenty of sugar... That yellow bag, with brown letters was Cafe' Du' Monde! French Market has a bright red label...

I have some cafe du monde coffee beans from the last time I visited! Thought I'd snag them while I was in the neighborhood, come to find out they are sold in a supermarket down the street from my house. At least I know I'll always have easy access to them, even when I'm not in NOLA!

I see them all over town. I buy them sometimes when I need the can, but aside from that they only sell it preground, so I typically don't buy it.

Very true. I still grab some if I'm having a Cafe Du Monde craving though. Not an exact match, but it'll do!
