Default Vietnamese Coffee

Does anyone have a recipe for Vietnamese coffee? I had some yesterday from a place by my house and it blew me away, and kept me up all night! I tried using just drip with some condensed milk, but it didn't taste even close to what I was after.

Have you tried a very dark roast? The last time I made it I used a French roast and it was pretty good.
I'll send you a recipe from a Daniel Young book that I read recently... got to get home from work first

Found it!

2-3 tablespoons sweetened condensed milk (optional)
2 rounded tablespoons (15 gms) medium ground coffee, preferably dark roast or dark roast with chicory
2/3 cup boiling water

(If using) pour the condensed milk into glass/ cup first.

Do you have the vietnamese filter already? If not, maybe you can try using French Pressed coffee rather than drip?

Good luck!

Can you post the recipe here?

Or the record I use espresso shots and poor in the condensed milk till it starts to get cloudy. Make sure the coffee, whatever you use, is pipping hot, otherwise the milk won't break up, and you end up with globs of it at the bottom.

Here's the recipe from Daniel Young's Coffee Love

2-3 tablespoons sweetened condensed milk (optional)
2 rounded tablespoons (15 gms) medium ground coffee, preferably dark roast or dark roast with chicory
2/3 cup boiling water

(If using) pour the condensed milk into glass/ cup first.

Remove the lid from the vietnamese filter pot and screw off the upper screen. Place the filter pot over the glass or cup, add the coffee to the filter container, and tap the container so the grinds settle somewhat evenly on the bottom. Screw the upper screen tightly over the coffee.

Pour enough boling water to rise just slightly over the upper screen and wait 20 seconds. Unscrew the upper screen two turns, add enough boiling water to fill the container, replace the lid, and let the coffee slowly drip until the liquid has drained, 4 to 5 minutes.

Remove the lid first and palce it, inverted, on the table or counter. Remove the filter and place it atop the lid, which acts as a protective coaster. If you're not using sweetened condensed milk, stir sugar into the coffee. If you have used condensed milk, stir with the coffee until fully blended.

It's a small metal coffee filter that's usually placed over your coffee mug and slowly allows the rich coffee to drip out and into you cup (often onto a spoon or two worth of condensed milk). You can find them at Asian stores, markets or on Amazon. They are not all expensive- around $3-$5 for single serve pots. I bought two from Amazon earlier this year and have been really pleased with them. Here are some pics:

Hope this helps!

Thanks guys. I found that if I boil it, it get's pretty close, but then someone told me that's just Turkish coffee with condensed milk. I guess they use those at Vietnamese restaurants?

Well, I'm headed to my local Oriental Market tonight to see if I can't find one.
