I was in Austin some time in the past..

and was in a very very nice coffee shop (I rly don't remember the name), it was somewhere near the Convention centre. IT was so good.

I've been in Austin not quite 3 years. Prior to moving here I lived in Philadelphia, Tucson, and a few other places. Found some great coffee spots in those places.
Austin - over on 5th and San Marcos is a nice place - Progress Coffee.
I also like Genuine Joe on Anderson.
Neither of these places has ever been really crowded when I've gone, they serve a nice cup of coffee, nice food items and pretty good ambience.

I've heard good things about Genuine Joe. Never heard of Progress, but then I am rarely down town. I avoid it like the plague. Something about waiting in traffic and waiting, and waiting that turns me off of the whole experience.
