Starbucks schmarbucks
First off, this is my first posting. I'm a member of a related forum (homebrewtalk) and saw this site advertised and can finally get something off my chest.
I can't stand Starbucks. I can't stand how their coffee is awful (way over roasted to compensate for the fact they use a cheap bean that can stay on the shelf for over a year). I can't stand how everybody thinks their coffee is so good and is how coffee is supposed to taste like (it's like Budweiser, Miller, or Coors and their brainwashing of America). I can't stand how Starbucks feels they are important enough to have more coffeeshops than McDonalds and I really can't stand that their sales warrant it!
How can the American public be such sheep?
Sorry. I've been waiting to say that paragraph in a public place for years. Feel free to discuss or discard - whatever floats your boat.

You are singing my song. My kids worship that place, but I personally believe it is more of a social thing, with complete internet access, rather than the burnt tasting coffee.

Starbucks over-roasts all their coffee. I think they do this to get a uniform flavor, year in and year out. The only problem with this approach is that their coffee tastes like charcoal. I will buy starbucks, if there is nothing else. The one good thing *$ did was bring premium coffee to the masses. Before them most people thought Maxwell House was what coffee should taste like. Along the way *$ became the evil empire and lost it's soul.

As a culture we are just now finding out what good coffee is. I think in time people will come to realize that SB is not good and will seek good coffee elsewhere.

Absolutely people are more aware of coffee regions and what good coffee should taste like. There are those sheep who think *$ is great coffee. It's the herd mentality. At a previous job, I took some fresh roasted coffee in one day. These were idiots who just LOVED *$. So I brew up my beans and they thought it was "pretty good", but weren't nearly as excited as when they brewed up the pre-ground, store bought *$ beans. So I never took my beans up there again.

I joined this Forum just to comment on this. I've had one cup of SB's, and was totally unimpressed. I can make better coffee at home while sloppy drunk! I think people go there to "see and be seen". However, they do give me 5-gallon buckets of UCG for my compost pile.

I too think Starbucks is overrated. I am not a fan of their coffee, but I do like their lattes, and some specialty drinks, but again the price is just ridiculous. I honestly think Starbucks gets a lot of hype because of their speciality drinks. It's like name brand clothing. Your paying more for the name than the actual quality of the product.
There has been a recent pole released that actually put Wendy's coffee at the top of the favourites list. I believe Starbucks falls near the bottom...

I'll have to give Wendy's a try then. I'm all for finding a great cup of coffee so I know where to stop when I'm on the road.

Some of these places use a coffee concentrate type beverage. I initially thought that Jack in the Box had a good cup, but one day it was a bit off. I asked about their method and it turned out they had these big plastic bags with coffee concentrate in them. They then add hot water. This is done by a machine, so the mix is uniform. I think Burger King does this same thing with their Turbo Joe.
