What's a Good Tip
Let's say you order a $3 iced latte.
As a Barista what would you consider to be an adequate tip for that.

If I go to Peet's to pick up a coffee while out running errands, and the barista does a great job -- I'd add a dollar tip to my drink purchase -- usually a Decaf Americano.
but I work in the service industry and know what people get paid.
I also know how to poach great staff to add to my team

I always tip $1 per drink, as long as the service is good. If it takes a substantial bit of time to take my order and prepare or if they're just rude, they can look elsewhere for a tip.

I consider myself a good tipper... for excellent service at a restaurant, I'll go 50% easily if the server is on his toes (but never less than $5). But that's for service-industry people that make less than minimum wage and depend on tips for their livelihood.
Please correct me if I'm wrong, but coffee-shop employees aren't "servers" in the definition of making less than minimum wage, are they? I've been operating under the assumption that they aren't.
To be honest, I won't always tip at a coffee house. For really great service (fast & friendly) I'll toss my coins in the jar for one drink, or a dollar (maybe $2) for 2 drinks.

I don't always tip for coffee, but when I do, I treat the barista like a bartender - a dollar per drink.

In Texas, Coffee shop employees make at least minimum wage. The couple of friends that I have that have done it said they make the rest in tips. They don't make server wages.

Every cafe I've worked, Baristas make minimum wage. But we survive on tips for gas and food. So $1 a drink is definitely fair. Also consider that we have to split tips as well.

This is the reason I avoid going into the fancy coffee houses. If I order a cup of plain coffee, the price is about ~$1.50. Throwing a dollar seems way too much, throwing coins seems way too cheap. What is the solution?
