Default Paper Filters?

Are they necessary? I have an old Cuisinart that has a mesh filter, but it still came with paper cones. Why do they provide me with both? Am I supposed to use the paper filters still?

The paper versus mesh question. I know this much, the paper filters can absorb some of the oils fromthe coffee grounds...so those oils can pass through the mesh. If you have ever had French press coffee you can really see and taste the oils fromthe grounds. For me, it's based on my mood.

I never use the paper. I can taste it in the brew. I take the oil over the paper taste any day!

I dont taste any. It also gives a clearer brew. I had the "gold" filters and have seen them get plugged up. I see some pf the powder get stuck in them. I was also told NOT to put them in the dishwasher.

I use the mesh at home, and the paper at work. I would say that I like the flavor of my home brew better, but it also leaves more gunk in the bottom of my mug that has an off taste if it gets stirred up.

The machine at work is a BUNN, so I would say the advantage should go to that machine if everything else was equal.

when I use the drip coffee maker from cuisineart, I use the mesh filter, we don't have a single paper filter in the house and that is nice!

I keep them on hand. I just refuse to throw away the ones that came with the machine.

Just a word of warning to those who might have cholesterol problems. Unfiltered coffee has been shown to increase cholesterol levels in trial patients. The names of the two responsible compounds are out on the net, as are the studies. Paper filters have been shown to remove these two compounds and therefore reduce the risk of increased cholesterol. I prefer to try to reduce my cholesterol by diet and enjoy my coffee unfiltered.
