Default Consumer Reports: coffee makers

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- If you can't get moving without a cup of coffee in the morning, you might want to start with a great coffeemaker.

We teamed up with Consumer Reports to find some of the best brewing machines for your money.

There are a lot of ways to brew coffee, including traditional coffemakers and single-serve machines.

Consumer Reports checked out more than 65 coffeemakers from names like Cuisinart, Mr. Coffee and Krups. The most important factor was brew performance.

"Part of what we're looking for in our brew performance test is to see whether or not the coffeemaker can reach the ideal temperature of 195 to 205 degrees Fahrenheit," said Consumer Reports' Eric Hado.

When it comes to today's coffeemakers, you have lots of options. There are brew and dispense models. In addition to a traditional carafe, some coffeemakers have a divided basket so you can brew two different types of coffee into two thermoses.

When all the tests were done, Consumer Reports recommended several traditional coffeemakers, including the Mr. Coffee, model 633 GT, for just $35.

And with the growing sales of single-serve coffee pods, Consumer Reports also tested more than a dozen designed just for those.

"With coffee pods, we look for things like brew temperature, consistency, speed, and convenience," Hado said.

Testers top-rated the Senseo Supreme SL 7832 for $125. It was one of the fastest, brewing a cup of coffee in under two minutes, and it can brew two cups at once.

After you've bought the perfect coffeemaker, make sure to get a great tasting coffee to brew.

In Consumer Reports tests of ground Colombian coffee, Gloria Jean's Colombian Supremo scored top ratings. It costs $12.99 a pound.

Right behind it is Newman's Own Organics Colombian Especial Medium, which impressed testers with its nutty and fruity notes. It costs $8.50 a pound.

I have a simple drip at home and I've always enjoyed it.

It seems consumer reports often times recommends cheaper things. I wonder whether the people testing where actual coffee lovers though?

Sure I'm addicted, but I love the stuff. My wife drinks it everyday and still has yet to develop a taste for it.

Agreed. I think CR is a bit quick to accept a lower price tradeoff for the best performance or full features. They are also very quick to criticize small quirks in a product that don't necessarily impact performance or durability. The main reason I don't subscribe; I skim the latest issue in the barber shop.

It's the value/performance gripe.

If something is expensive it ought to/be/do ____ when the reality could be in the production methods.

I'm willing to pay more for something produced in the US for instance as I can assure the practices used to produce it.
