Question French Press

I'm new here. I recently sold my coffee machine. My wife doesn't drink coffee, and it seemed pointless to use counter space on something I seldom use. I drink a lot of coffee...I have gotten to where I use instant coffee though. I spent a couple of weeks in the UK, and instant coffee was everywhere over there. It grew on me, and I came back to the states and started using the stuff like crazy. It sounds wretched, but it's not too bad...plus it's a fast way to make a cup of coffee. However, I have started missing "real" coffee. I considered the pod coffee makers, but people I know haven't had very good things to say about them. I did some hunting and ran across the Aerobie AeroPress. I thought I could use it and add water to make an Americano.

Then I began to wonder about a French Press. Can someone tell me a little bit about them? Do they make good coffee? How hard are they to clean? Is there a certain French Press that is better than others?

I love my French Press. It's not at all difficult to clean if you have access to a garbage disposal, only slightly.moreso if you don't.

You can compost the grounds, if you need them for such a thing. French press is probably my favorite method of making coffee. You ground, drop it in the press, add water and wait 4 minutes. You then plunge and bam, you are done. French press is also much more forgiving than espresso. It also makes a great cup of coffee, as long as your coffee is freshly roasted. I usually was my press by hand, but will run it through the dishwasher if I dont have time to hand wash it. I would personally recommend a plastic framed press, because you can fill it with water and microwave the whole thing to get your water hot. I have a plastic one at work for that exact reason. Good luck!

I really like my French Press. I get a little more mileage out of the grinds when I put them in the French press vs. espresso machine. I would recommend that after you wait 4-5 minutes use a spoon and carefully remove the top frothy part (wont be more than a spoonful) this will let your french press lever go down easier.

I'l be trying it this weekend.

I'm looking for something to cut back on the oil left at the top and I'm thinking this is it.
