Default Coffee Strength and Complexity in Vacuum Machines

Almost bought one, then heard the coffee is relatively weak compared to presses and drip machines. I love strong coffee but will oftentimes kick it to the side for good complexity. So...is it a clean extraction? Can you really taste ever little nook and crany in there?

I'm no expert, but I know what I like... I prefer coffee from vacuum-pots... As for 'clean' I assume you mean not having grounds in the bottom... I never did with the Bodum stove-top system, but it's fragile. Looking for another one that's not so easy to break.

By clean I'm guessing he means not burnt, without a lot of brewing flavors.

I use a vacuum pot when the mood strikes. By clean I mean that the taste is pure, unaffected by any contamination. Drip machines are notorious for making bad coffee. French press produces a cup with lots of body, but it's a bit too pungent for some people. The vacuum pot produces a very smooth cup of coffee. I have espresso machines, a Krups MokaBrew, several Moka pots, french presses and other coffee gadgets, but my favorite brewed coffee is from a vacuum pot. I used to own the Bodum Santos, which doesn't allow for a long enough steep. Now I'm using a glass pot and I replaced the cloth filter with a glass rod filter. So my coffee touches nothing but glass, which is unaffected by coffee oils.

Is that the Cory? Been seeing those on E-bay, but are they sturdier than the Bodum? I was washing mine and a mild tap with my wedding-ring shattered it...

The glass rod filter is by Cory, but the brewer itself is by Yama. Here is the link to SweetMaria's. Yama Vacuum Brewer - Two Sizes - Vacuum - Brewers

While these are not nearly that fragile, they will break if you bang them against the sink. I've been lucky not to have broken one yet. I banged mine against the granite around my sink and it survived.

I recorded a video of vac pot brewing over the weekend, but I sound like a dufus! My work computer won't allow me to view them or upload them either. If anyone is interested, I'll post them from home.

I disagree that the vac pot doesnt make strong coffee. What it doesnt make is coffee with that bitter hit, which is what I had associated with strong coffee. Fresh beans, which means less than two weeks post roast and the correct amount of coffee, and you are on your way. If the beans are fresh, the vac pot makes an excellent cup of coffee.
